A company called Madison CF UK Limited manage and control various websites, networks and databases including 118118money.com. On the 20th March 2020, Madison CF UK Limited discovered illegal unauthorised access into their network/IT systems. As a result, criminals responsible for the said ‘cyber-attack’ accessed recordings of customer service telephone calls. As such, customers of 118188money.com would have had their personal information including their name, address and date of birth unlawfully accessed as they would have provided these details when calling customer service. Madison CF UK Limited emailed the affected customers on the 28th March 2020 to explain what had happened.
The personal information of the affected 118118 customers may have been accessible to an unknown number of parties for a long period of time. Madison CF UK Limited should have ensured, as data controller, that their networks/IT systems etc were kept safe and secure so as to ensure the personal information/data of their customers would not be compromised.
Madison CF UK Limited have failed to protect their customers’ data and, as a result, they are potentially liable under the GDPR for the loss and control of their customers’ personal data. Madison CF UK Limited also failed to process the data in a manner that ensures that the said information was secure which breaching the confidence of their customers by their misusing of private information and infringement of their customers’ right to privacy in respect of their personal data.
